Forbidden Rice Pudding

I’ve been craving rice pudding ever since I got a sample at Silvestre Gusto Latino after last Saturday’s Social Bites dinner (my friend Todd and I were hobby-cheffing and had a blast. Will summarize in a later post).

There are a variety of rices in my house after I went a little crazy at Whole Foods’ 25% bulk day back in November. Forbidden rice is by far the most intriguing because of its super black colour. I thought I’d see what would happen if I substituted it in this rice pudding recipe. It turned out delicious. So delicious that I’m trying not to eat the entire pot of it now…

Hearty Homemade Oatmeal

With colder weather taking hold I find, as you might too, that I’m craving warmer meals. With the change to a colder season the body goes into — in my totally UN-scientific opinion — human-hibernation-mode(!) where it needs to conserve energy to keep itself warm and moving. In my mind, this also explains why we tend to hold a little more weight in the winter months (fat/adipose tissue = insulation). Cold foods take more energy for the body to digest, thus leaving less energy for keeping us warm.

This oatmeal recipe is my staple for cold-weather breakfasts and it’s hearty enough to keep the body going until lunch time. You may be thinking, how am I supposed to find time to COOK before work/school/insert-activity-here, but believe me, oatmeal is super quick to prep AND pretty fool-proof (besides forgetting about it while getting ready in the morning and coming back to a burning pan. Believe me. I know :S)

I like to make two to four servings at a time, portion it out, then reheat it on the stove for the next few mornings with a little almond milk. Add the seeds, nuts and other toppings after it’s heated; they’ll stay nice and crunchy and anything containing omega fats will be less likely to go off.

Baked Crabapples with Onion and Sage

Many times in yoga class we are asked to set an intention for our practice. It could be anything from courage or strength, to softness or vulnerability. Setting an intention helps us move from just making shapes with our bodies to watching what comes up during our practice and working with the energy in our subtle bodies to deepen our understanding of ourselves.

Recently as I’ve come to my mat, I’ve found that “love” is the intention that pops into my head first. Sending love out into your everyday life not only benefits you, but also strengthens your relationships with the people around you and the earth. You might recall a time when “love” was the intention for your asana practice as well. That day, maybe you left that love intention on the mat, carried a little into the next activity you did, or perhaps you made love your highest purpose in life!

You can express love for yourself and for others in many ways: smiling at a stranger on the sidewalk, sending a note to a dear friend out-of-the-blue, expressing gratitude, or doing something by yourself just for the fun of it. Another great way to share this intention is through food. Cooking for those you love, bringing baked goods to friends or coworkers, is enough to let anyone know that they are loved!

Crabapples are ripe all over the city, just waiting to be used in this month’s recipe. Try it for upcoming holiday meals, because food made with love always tastes better! Continue reading

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” You may have found that if you come to yoga on an empty stomach, you get dizzy and have very little energy, especially first thing in the morning. Your body is a complex machine that needs fuel to function properly. Nourishing the body with good food at regular intervals maintains your blood sugar levels, allowing you to think clearly and use your energy efficiently to remain active throughout the day. The Best Muffins

The draw to pick up a muffin with your coffee on the way to work can be hard to resist. But what’s really in that muffin?

Baking at home allows you to choose your ingredients, avoid allergens and incorporate your ethical choices about food. I know it can seem overwhelming, time consuming and sometimes tedious, but I have a simple fix for you: a good base recipe!

Just like setting the foundation – hands and feet – in yoga allows you to build from the primary poses into more advanced variations, having a good base muffin recipe allows for a reliable quick cake that can handle varying flavours and textures. You can ensure you always have the ingredients you need on hand, so when the urge to bake arises, you’re ready to go.

To save time, make a double or triple batch every few weeks, then freeze them. Take a few out of the freezer whenever you want and pop into the toaster oven. You’ll pull out perfectly baked muffins every time!

Here’s my favourite base muffin recipe. I’ve included variations I like to do in brackets and flavour combinations at the end. This recipe can easily be made wheat-free, dairy free, or vegan. Continue reading
